Married at First Sight Australia 2023’s Duncan James has spoken up about his breakup with his on-screen wife Alyssa Barmonde.
During an appearance on Today Extra on March 27, the cyber security salesman explained why he dumped the 35-year-old executive assistant during Final Vows, admitting that it wasn’t an easy decision for him.
“We didn’t look at relationships in the same way, in my eyes,” he told co-hosts David Campbell and Sylvia Jeffreys.
“I don’t think we resolve conflict the same way and I don’t think we communicated in the same way. But it was a really hard decision. There were lots of good times as well,” he said.
The 36-year-old also stated that he was surprised by the mother-of-one’s decision to stay with him after the “traumatic month” they’d shared during the experiment.
“We had a really traumatic month before that,” he confessed.
“In our final dates, I asked a few times ‘Do you think the last month has been good or bad? Because if you think it’s been bad – but it’s because of the experiment – I could understand that.
‘But if you think it’s been great, then we are in different places in terms of what we think a healthy relationship looks like'”.
Despite their messy breakup, Duncan expressed that he still has a lot of respect for Alyssa.
“Alyssa is a great woman. We’re just not the right people for each other,” he stated.
Duncan dumped Alyssa during their Final Vows
During the March 26 episode, Duncan finally put an end to his toxic relationship with Alyssa.
“Alyssa, I came into this experiment to find the love of my life, I dreamed of finding my forever person,” he started.
“I know what love and a great relationship is and we both deserve that. But our views on what a healthy relationship is seems to be apart,” he continued.
He finished his Final Vows by telling Alyssa that “the gap [seemed] too big to bridge and ultimately, [he had] to say goodbye.”
Alyssa didn’t take this too well, responding: “F**k, I was not expecting that.”
So Dramatic! has since revealed that Duncan is now dating his co-star Evelyn Ellis.
