Married at First Sight Australia 2023‘s Duncan James reportedly dumped his IRL girlfriend just weeks before entering the experiment, and yeah, those are red flags you see waving mighty high!
Fans fell in love with Duncan the moment he appeared on the show, with many backing the cyber security salesman when his wife, Alyssa Barmonde, turned on him in the latter half of the season.
However, sources revealed in episode 272 of the So Dramatic! podcast that the 36-year-old had just as many secrets as the other dodgy grooms.
One participant said Duncan was “telling Alyssa he wanted to have kids with her” as early as “week three of the experiment”.
Of course, this had everyone convinced “he was seriously into her”.
However, things went sideways when “Alyssa found out during filming he only broke up with his long-term girlfriend weeks before going into the experiment”.
“Alyssa was so hurt,” the participant added. “She also caught him messaging his ex during the experiment and saw he still had photos of her on his Instagram.” Awkward!
Like any scorned woman, the mum-of-one “confronted” her hubby, which “caused a huge fight that they never played because it didn’t suit the edit Duncan was getting”.
Apparently, this whole debacle kicked off Alyssa’s paranoia, but the final edit was “made out to look like she was upset over other things like him not giving her attention”.

A second source who knows the fan-favourite groom revealed Duncan wasn’t lacking in the romance department before MAFS.
“Duncan was a big ladies’ man before MAFS,” they said. “He’s had a lot of girlfriends, let’s just say that.
“He still had a girlfriend in May and filming started in August, so I dunno what happened there. [He] probably got called for the show and said cya later, unless he applied immediately after they broke up.”
Another insider dished that Duncan was with his bae, Anna, for a year before he called it quits.
“[He] broke up with her to go on the show… That’s what she’s told people anyway,” the source confessed.
“She’s been saying that he’s not the nice guy he’s been edited as. Apparently, he only wanted to increase his profile.” Ah, don’t they all!
They also backed up claims that they were “definitely still together in May”. And Alyssa, sweetie, we’re gonna need you to come on the podcast to spill all the tea!
