The Masked Singer Australia 2022’s first wildcard Microphone was introduced during the August 15 episode, as guesses from the judging panel began flowing in.
While judge Dave “Hughesy” Hughes suspected Microphone was the late singer Meatloaf (*insert eye-roll here*), the others had more reasonable predictions like Brandy and Halsey.
However, it was Mel “B” Brown’s guess of Michelle Williams from Destiny’s Child that truly hit the nail on the sparkly head!
“I think I know who that is,” Mel B said early on in the wild card’s performance, before offering two guesses.
At first, Mel B thought Microphone was singer JoJo but quickly changed her mind, locking in Michelle as her answer.
Which Clues Prove Michelle Williams is Microphone on The Masked Singer Australia
“I’m Microphone, and I’m here to bring some real glamour,” she starts in the clue package.
On X-Factor US in 2013, fellow Destiny’s Child member Kelly Rowland dubbed one girl group “Baby Destiny’s Child“. The group’s name? Glamour!
Michelle William’s Life Before Destiny’s Child
Quite a lot of her The Masked Singer Australia clue package focused on her early years before joining Destiny’s Child.
“I didn’t start in a place like this, in fact, I took quite a different path and doubted my own abilities but I eventually learned to believe in me,” Microphone said.
Later in the clue package, she continued: ” I was almost involved in a life of crime, and my parents would have been proud! I got two years, but thankfully I had the best lawyer money can buy.”
Michelle doubted her own ability to make it as a singer, so she decided to study criminal justice at Illinois State University. She left university after two years to pursue her music career.
Michelle William’s Life and Career After Destiny’s Child
Microphone said that she knew “the dark times too, but you only see the purple patches”.
Michelle has been vocal about her experiences with depression. Microphone later played Rock Paper Scissors, which is also the name of a mental health organisation that Michelle supports.
As for the “purple patches”, Michelle starred in The Colour Purple stage musical in Chicago.
She also played Roxie Hart in Chicago on Broadway. Two bodyguards danced while Microphone was talking about her life of crime, which could be a reference to the famous Chicago song Cell Block Tango.
The dancing could also could double as a reference to her appearance on Dancing with the Stars.
Microphone was also seen in the clue package with a butterfly and a dove. Michelle previously competed on the Masked Singer US as the Butterfly.
The dove could refer to her solo Christian music background, as the bird is both a religious symbol and she was previously nominated for a GMA Dove Award.
The Masked Singer is no stranger to using other celebs with the same name in the clues. The other Michelle Williams (the actress) wanted to be a boxer growing up, according to Women’s Day NZ back in 2011.
