The Block judge Neale Whitaker has called out the show’s editors for leaving vital information about his role this season on the cutting room floor and airing an ‘incomplete narrative’.

During the August 6 premiere, the former magazine editor confessed to fellow longtime judges Shaynna Blaze and Darren Palmer that he’d be appearing on The Block less than usual this season.

Appearing visibly emotional, Neale confessed he was “breaking up the band temporarily” and wouldn’t be able to join them as a full-time judge this season.

He was then shown hugging his fellow judges who told him he had their full support. The trio then moved on to judging rooms, however, the reason behind his absence from the season was never aired.

Shortly after the episode, the 61-year-old took to Instagram to express his concerns about his edit.

“There’s nothing more frustrating than an unexplained decision or an incomplete narrative – especially where health and family are concerned,” he captioned a video of the scene in question.

“This is what went to air tonight on the first episode of The Block’s 19th season, my 17th. I broke the news to Shaynna and Darren that I would be unable to join them each week and explained my reasons.

However, since “those important reasons” never made the cut, he began to explain them to his followers.

“This year I’ve chosen to put family first. David, my partner of 20 years, has been experiencing some serious and ongoing health issues and we knew my place was at home.”

Neale went on to say that “Melbourne real estate expert” Marty Fox would be stepping in during his absence.

“The good news is that David is making great progress. My Block family has been fully supportive of my decision and I’m looking forward to returning to The Block full-time for the show’s 20th anniversary season in 2024,” he finished.
