MasterChef Australia fans expressed their “disappointment” with the lack of “Secrets and Surprises” this season, despite it being the theme of 2023.
On June 26, viewers took to Reddit to share their thoughts on the new series and things weren’t looking good.
“Is anyone not feeling the theme of this year? It’s not like there are many Secrets or Surprises,” one Redditor wrote.
“The trailers were promising. The first few episodes were promising. [However, the Secrets and Surprises] didn’t really last and they just became random vocabulary in random episodes.” Ouch.
Many users shared the same feelings, with one of them commenting: “the Secret and the Surprise” was that there weren’t any secrets and surprises. LOL.
Another person wrote that “the real title of the season should be: Random Stuff We Thought Up Each Week,” whilst another said they felt pretty “whelmed” by the show.
“The worst was the ‘surprise’ mystery box. Almost everyone did something that oozed out. This season’s meh,” another fan penned.
However, some viewers held a different opinion, sharing that they’d been enjoying the show’s 15th season.
“I don’t care about the theme, I’m loving the show this year,” one enthusiastic user said, whilst another agreed that MasterChef “doesn’t need a theme.”
MasterChef Australia ‘downplayed’ this year’s theme after the death of Jock Zonfrillo
One user thought that MasterChef was “downplaying” the theme after the passing of judge Jock Zonfrillo.
“I actually remember reading that they decided to downplay the ‘Secrets and Surprises’ in the edit after the chef’s death was announced.
“I do agree [that] this season nothing has really felt overly surprising,” they added.
And it seems like the Redditor was onto something, as according to The Australian, Channel Ten dropped the ‘Secrets and Surprises’ tagline out of respect to Jock.
However, another fan thought that MasterChef should’ve stuck to the theme, commenting: “It’s a disservice to [Jock] if you end up making his final season a bit of a damp squib.”
