The tenth season of Married At First Sight Australia has wrapped up for 2023 but the cast still hasn’t got control of their Instagram accounts back yet.

It’s not unusual for anyone taking part in reality TV to hand over the keys to their social media accounts to prevent spoilers and “going rogue“.

In previous years of MAFS, the participants have been handed back their accounts two weeks after the finale.

But an insider has revealed this season’s contestants will be waiting a little longer to access their accounts again. May 8 to be precise – which is more than a month after the show finished airing.

The extended period is due to the show also airing in the UK, a couple of weeks after Australia.

Participants have no access to their Instagram accounts during this time. They can write their own captions on photos but they need to be submitted to Nine’s social media team for approval beforehand.

Channel Nine stops Married At First Sight contestants cashing in on their 15 minutes of fame

Several past contestants have launched successful careers and built social media empires off the back of their newfound fame.

However, as Channel Nine is holding the Instagram accounts hostage for longer, there’s concern the engagement levels of those contestants will have dropped significantly and may affect their potential earnings.

The 2023 contestants also haven’t gained the same level of attention, or followers as past contestants either.

Martha Kalifatidis had more Instagram followers than any of the 2023 cast members did at this point.

The new mum gained over 200,000 fans whilst her season was airing in 2019, and her following continues to grow.

The source also said “a few people are worried they won’t get verified” and will have to fork out for their blue tick on Instagram. Welp!

The cast also isn’t allowed to access their direct messages which means setting up deals with sponsors is quite difficult.

Maybe being a reality star isn’t all it’s cracked up to be after all?
