Congratulations are in order for Married at First Sight Australia 2019‘s Martha Kalifatidis and Michael Brunelli who are expecting their first child!
The newly engaged couple — who found out they were pregnant whilst holidaying in Rome — made the exciting announcement via a video shared on Instagram on Monday, September 5.
“it hasn’t been this exciting, wonderful time for us,” Martha revealed, admitting that at five weeks, she was diagnosed with a severe case of Hyperemesis Gravidarum, which left her bedridden for two months.

The reality star recently disappeared offline for several weeks after a “mystery illness,” leading to concerns for her wellbeing.
In the clip, Martha, 34, explained that they had to wait until she felt better and had reached a safe point in her pregnancy before sharing their news publicly.
“We wanted to explain our situation and make a little bit of an announcement. Martha is pregnant,” Michael, 31, said in the video.
Martha then expressed that she didn’t want to sound like she was “complaining.”
“We are so excited; we are so happy. It was a complete surprise, but at five weeks, I was diagnosed with Hyperemesis Gravidarum, which is severe chronic nausea and vomiting with no relief. It is 24-7,” she said.
“I literally didn’t get out of bed for two months. I was so sick. I could not eat or drink anything. There were days I didn’t even get up to pee. I lost ten kilos in five weeks. We have been in and out of the emergency room and hospital.”
Martha then said she was feeling better after visiting a Melbourne doctor.
“She has given me some medication which has literally been life-changing. It is helping me feel human again,” she said before Michael added: “It was too early to share as well. We had to disappear offline and give a few excuses.”
He then thanked fans for their support and concern over the past few months.
Martha Recently Disappeared Offline After Coming Down With a “Mystery Illness”
The pair initially claimed Martha was left bedridden for weeks after catching a viral infection in Europe, which became so bad they were forced to cut their trip short and return to Australia.
“Hi, everyone. I know I’ve been quiet on here. I’ve been bedridden for a few weeks, but I’m finally home and getting the care I need,” Martha wrote on Instagram in August.
“I’ll be back soon. Thanks for all the messages. Sorry I haven’t got back to anyone. I really do appreciate the support though.”
After meeting on the 2019 season of Married at First Sight Australia, the couple’s relationship has gone from strength to strength, announcing their engagement in December 2021.
