The Block 2024‘s Jesse Maguire and Paige Beechey have revealed why they cancelled their upcoming wedding.
After quitting the 20th season of the renovation show due to mental health struggles, the couple, who’ve been together for seven years and got engaged in April 2022, announced that they’d pulled the plug on their pending nuptials.
Speaking to Woman’s Day, Paige confessed she was the one who called off their December wedding.
“I threw the idea out there first just because I handled the majority of the planning,” she said. “I just couldn’t bring myself to sit down and plan.”
“But it was the right decision,” Jesse chimed in.
Paige explained that while everything was “booked and bought” for their upcoming wedding, they “felt good” about cancelling it.
The controversial couple, who copped a lot of backlash from their stint on The Block, also stated that they didn’t have the “capacity” to host a wedding.
“The year has been very hectic, and we just didn’t have the mental capacity to give the wedding the attention it deserves,” Paige justified.
“For us, it’s not just about a wedding. It’s about actually getting married to each other,” Jesse added. “We felt we couldn’t put our full focus into it with how the year’s gone so far.”

Despite calling off their wedding, the duo, who still live together, admitted that their relationship has gone from strength to strength.
“We actually came away from [The Block] stronger than we entered, which people will probably be surprised at,” Jesse said.
“Our relationship was never in question,” Paige added. “But we can totally understand why people think that.”
The pair also said their relationship wasn’t affected when watching back their many blowups on the renovation show.
“We’re great communicators, contrary to who you see on The Block. It’s such a bizarre situation that neither of us have been in before, so we have a lot of patience and empathy,” Jesse recalled.
“After each episode, we talked about how we felt. We understood we’re in this together.”

According to Jesse, the “hardest part” about cancelling their wedding was “having to tell [their] family and friends”.
“My mum was so excited to finally be able to call Paige her daughter-in-law. It’s all she wanted for so long. But everyone was incredibly supportive and understood why we did it,” he said.
Paige also claimed that “getting through the past six months” has helped the couple build a “great foundation” for overcoming larger challenges.
When asked if they’re still planning to marry, the duo confessed that it’ll happen soon, but they’re unsure when.
“We’re not going to leave it too long, but we want a little mental vacation from thinking about the wedding. We’ll start having the conversations next year,” Paige finished.
It comes after sources told So Dramatic! that the real reason the pair cancelled their wedding was because Paige found herself at the centre of a couple of cheating scandals with The Block‘s tradies.
