Married at First Sight Australia 2024‘s Tim Calwell‘s best man Ben has revealed how the crowd really responded to his cooked AF wedding speech.
ICYMI: During his best man speech, Ben outed Tim for eating a four-day-old “rancid” chicken before turning to bride Sara Mesa and saying: “Sara, you can find solace in the fact that, rancid or not, Tim will still eat you.” (And if you want to read the full, unedited version, we’ve got you covered here!)
While it looked like the crowd was unimpressed with Ben’s words of wisdom, it turns out he actually got a great reception!

During his tell-all in episode 345 of the So Dramatic! podcast, the groomsman explained that guests actually responded “so well” to the speech.
“Everyone clapped and cried. And Sara was [even] tearing up because it was so heartfelt,” he told host Megan Pustetto — and we’re not so sure about this!
“I did have [my] beer goggles [on]. But I saw lots of laughter, and I thought people really enjoyed it, and there was definitely applause, which we didn’t hear [in the final edit.” Interesting…
Married at First Sight’ 2024’s Tim’s best man Ben says his speech was a hit
Ben also admitted that the bridesmaids were “kind of joking” when they called the speech “inappropriate”.
“They were like: ‘We just got interviewed, and we threw you under the bus…We were playing good cop, bad cop’,” he recalled.
Ben then confessed that the wedding guests told him his speech was “good” and “funny”.
“The speech actually finished on quite a touching note,” he clarified. “I don’t think it was perceived by many as a bad speech. And the wedding continued on with laughter and joy and dancing.”

In a shock twist, Ben confirmed that the producers actually approved his speech beforehand!
“[They] totally approved it. They said: ‘Love it’,” he said before spilling that Tim also gave him the go-ahead!
“I sent Tim one draft because it was a bit of a risqué speech… I also read it to friends and family, and I double-checked with the producers, and that was that.”
The best man also claimed that producers only aired the most shocking parts of his speech, making it look worse than it actually was.
“When [the crude jokes] are sandwiched between the more heartfelt moments, it doesn’t feel so jaw-dropping.
“I didn’t wish to have offended people; I’d hope to have entertained… I put blood, sweat and tears into that speech.”
Ben reveals whether any of the ‘experiments’ mentioned in his speech actually took place
Ben also set the record straight regarding whether the “experiments” referenced in his speech actually took place.
“You’ll be disgusted to hear that the four-day-old chicken story is 100 per cent true,” the groomsman said. He added that it was “peer-reviewed by his friends”. And surprisingly, Ben never got sick from eating it!
However, it was less clear whether the other anecdotes Ben mentioned actually occurred.
When asked if Tim actually received “road head” (Ben’s words, not ours!), the cheeky best man said, “I can’t elaborate… It’s memorable because it was a really nice car. That’s all I can say.”
He then confirmed that Tim never received “head in the ER”.
“That was a total fabrication,” he admitted. And at this point, we’re not sure what to believe anymore…
Ben addresses whether Tim was really over his ex before filming MAFS
During the wedding, sh*t hit the fan when Tim admitted to Sara that he was about to PROPOSE to his ex, whom he only broke up with SIX months prior, causing her to question whether he was really over his past relo.
However, during his tell-all, Ben stated that Tim was well and truly over his former partner before his stint on MAFS.
“It felt like a really long six months,” he said.
Despite speculation about the quick turnaround between Tim’s breakup and his application for the dating show, Ben then confirmed that Tim was scouted for MAFS.
“He wasn’t actually going to go on the show,” Ben dished. “But then I had people over who enjoy MAFS… and they were all like ‘Do it!’.”
And the rest is history!
