Big Brother Australia’s Skye Wheatley has revealed that she only makes around $100 in earnings from ads for posting a YouTube video, thanks to her low viewership.

“Last payment I got was $100, I’m pretty sure but that’s because I don’t have high views. The more views, the more you get paid, basically,” Skye explained in a recent Instagram Q&A.

Despite having almost 250,000 subscribers on YouTube, Skye’s lifestyle vlogs rarely reach 20,000 views.

Her most recent video (published in December 2022) reached 18,000 views, with just 429 likes and 27 comments.

While she isn’t obligated to share her full income, $100 isn’t quite all there is to it.

She may have earned that through ads alone, but a huge proportion of her videos also have sponsorships, where she’d earn the bulk of her income.

Why is Skye Wheatley earning so little through Google Adsense on YouTube?

YouTubers can get paid either per click-through rate (aka directly clicking on the ad to go to that website) or “per view”.

But it’s not “per view” of the YouTube video itself, but rather whether the viewer watched at least 30 seconds (or half of the allocated time) of the ad before skipping.

In December, Skye posted two videos. If we’re going off the views on those videos alone, she would have earned between $45 to $144 USD, according to e-commerce app Sellfy.

Meanwhile, Social Blade reports Skye’s account earns her a measly $17  –  $268 per month. Ouch!

Skye Wheatley’s YouTube viewership has plummeted in recent months

If you’re wondering why Skye’s viewership has fallen so significantly from previous years (she used to pull in 100K on some vids), that’s easily explained as well…

Her low engagement rate (compared to her sub count) is causing YouTube’s algorithm to penalise her channel, not sharing it as recommended on related videos.

That’s why you’re always hearing YouTubers urging their fans to “like” their videos and “comment down below”!

She’s also not exactly enticing new fans with her video titles either, with one video from November literally just called “VLOG” with a thumbnail of her son Bear.

Of course, there are plenty of people who post to YouTube for their own entertainment/record-keeping.

But, we’ll note that the same “VLOG” features sponsorship from a loungewear brand. What it says on the label isn’t exactly what you’ll find in the tin, which could also be damaging her viewership rates.

And her numerous scandals wouldn’t have exactly helped!
