The Block fans were baffled by the show’s frustrating commitment to a “country” aesthetic, with judges Shaynna Blaze and Neale Whitaker focused on the need to stick to a particular style.

While some fans on social media understood the continuing “country” theme, many felt that maintaining the same aesthetic across all the competitors would make everything look boringly similar.

In particular, latecomer Blockheads Rachel and Ryan Carr created a modern, spacious main bathroom and the judges were not happy, Jan.

While judges were impressed by how well the couple did on their first week, they got caught up on the style.

Shaynna claimed the bathroom didn’t do “much justice to the heritage of the home”.

“To me it doesn’t speak to country at all, it feels like a very urban bathroom,” Neale said.

However, Neale noted that potential buyers could still expect a renovated period home to have a contemporary bathroom.

Meanwhile, Darren Palmer believed the wood accents and native flowers made the bathroom “country, Australian and contemporary”.

As for Sharon and Ankur’s room, Shaynna really freaked tf out!

“It ain’t this beautiful Victorian home, that’s for sure,” she said, after Neale said he wasn’t “sure where they had taken us”.

“If any house would get me angry, it’s doing this to that beautiful house we’ve walked through,” she said before continuing: “This is the grand dame. These are the jewels in the crown, and I’m not joking…

“Are you going to treat her like this? Because if you’re going to treat her like this, you’re going to have to deal with me.” Oooft.

The Block Fans Are Already Sick of the Word “Country”

In just the second week of The Block 2022, fans were already sick of the word “country” and believed the “rule” left no room for creativity.

“Why is there, where is there a rule that the interior must be country!? No room to think outside the box,” one viewer wrote on a Facebook fan page.

One fan suggested that the Blockheads could “mix and match country with retro, with modern or whatever you like”.

“All the bedrooms look the same. I know it’s early days, but I hope they bring in some of their own unique ideas,” they said.

“The fuss they are making about it on judging and on walkthrough… they are straight telling the contestants what they want them to do… do otherwise and get marked down,” a third wrote.

“I think they just want to see a little nod to the houses’ history, as well as keep in mind they are in the country. But I don’t think they are expecting full country style. Because they are expecting a lil modern in there [sic],” one fan argued.

Another confused fan added: “So I don’t think they are asking for real country living? I think modern and keeping nods to the past while touches of homely country.? Idk I think I’m lost now. [sic]”

Other fans pointed out that building modern extensions to the period homes was contradictory to the judges’ commitment to the “country” or heritage style.
