The Block 2024 fans have called out Ricky Recard and Haydn Wise for “cultural appropriation” after they replicated Indigenous artwork.

During the September 24 episode, the teams were tasked with painting surfboards to display in their homes.

However, fans took to social media to rage when Ricky and Haydn, who are both white, decided to paint Indigenous-style artwork on their boards.

“Extremely disappointing no one in production stepped in to let the boys know that replicating Indigenous art is inappropriate and cultural appropriation,” one user wrote on The Block‘s official Instagram page.

“What in the blatant cultural appropriation is going on here?” another asked, whilst a third quipped: “I missed which mob Ricky and Haydn were from. Can you share?”

Fans call out The Block for ‘allowing CULTURAL APPROPRIATION’ to air

Viewers were also livid that the show allowed cultural appropriation to air.

One person claimed they were “extremely disappointed” that the boys’ surfboard went to air and their actions weren’t questioned by anyone.

“What in the colonisation is this?” another fan penned. “Using Indigenous art, POORLY, I might add, and not one person in the entire production team said this was a bad idea… Cultural appropriation at its finest. Poor form, folks.”

Another said: “It’s cultural appropriation, plain and simple. Someone in that room should have pulled those boys aside and explained that this was inappropriate.”

A fourth fan asked how “not one person” stopped “cultural appropriation” going to air in 2024.

People also shared the same opinion on Twitter, stating that “two white men” shouldn’t be allowed to replicate “Aboriginal-style” art.
