It’s been revealed when and how Married at First Sight Australia 2024‘s Lucinda Light learned of Timothy Smith‘s criminal past.
As first reported by So Dramatic!, the 52-year-old spent over a year in super-maximum prison in the US in 2006 after being arrested for trafficking marijuana across the Canadian border.
Later partaking in a tell-all A Current Affair interview, Timothy admitted he kept his chequered past a secret from MAFS producers.

While the TV groom garnered much support from fans, some criticised him under the assumption he also kept his history under wraps from Lucinda.
However, as reported in episode 376 of the So Dramatic! podcast, Timothy did share these details with his TV wife early on in the experiment.
“Timothy didn’t keep his criminal past from Lucinda at all. That is not true,” one insider said. “He was very upfront with her about it from the start.
“He actually told her everything during their honeymoon.”
What did Married at First Sight‘s Lucinda Light say about Timothy Smith’s past?
Thankfully, Lucinda “didn’t care” about her husband’s past indiscretions.
“She was completely okay with it,” the source told host Megan Pustetto. “She told Timothy not to stress as it wasn’t a big deal and one mistake doesn’t define who you are today.
“Lucinda said it was in the past and happened so long ago, and as long as he learnt from it and isn’t that same person, it’s not something she would ever hold against him.”

They added: “She was very gracious and understanding about it and appreciated his honesty in telling her about it as early as he did.”
MAFS producers only learned of Timothy’s past when he spoke to A Current Affair
The insider also revealed that MAFS producers only learned of Timothy’s criminal history when he spoke to A Current Affair.
“Timothy went to ACA, saying he wanted to share his story. The bosses approved it and gave it the green light,” they explained.
“Timothy didn’t disclose it [beforehand] because he was worried they would have thought of him differently,” they explained.
“During filming, he considered telling them, but he worried they would kick him off the show, which would also ruin Lucinda’s opportunity.”

Unsurprisingly, “producers were a bit annoyed that it wasn’t disclosed”. They were also allegedly “hesitant” to allow Timothy to speak out about his past.
“They were worried they would look bad for the show and for them for not doing their due diligence and picking it up during the casting process,” the source said.
“Obviously, they would have preferred to have known, but they were relieved with how the interview went and the reaction from viewers, which was overall positive, and they have been supportive since.
“In saying that, the incident has highlighted some major flaws in their vetting system.”
It comes after a Channel Nine spokesperson defended the show’s background check process in a statement to So Dramatic!.
