The Block buyer Danny Wallis has called out the rule that’s made it “impossible” for people to have “control” over their properties.

The entrepreneur, who has spent over $30 million on properties on The Block, explained why he was selling the house renovated by 2019 contestants Mitch Edwards and Mark McKie.

Speaking to realestate.com.au, Danny explained that a Victorian government plan to change the land tax payment threshold from January 2024 was one of the reasons he decided to sell.

These new changes will force homeowners to pay land tax if their investment, or any secondary property, is worth $50,000 or more. The current threshold is $300,000.

“Land taxes are way too dear and these days you can’t get a decent return,” he said.

He also explained that he’d consider selling his other investment properties, including homes purchased on the renovation show, because he could be facing a jaw-dropping tax bill.

The residential tenancies regulations that were introduced in 2021 were another factor pushing him to sell.

These laws allowed tenants to do various things such as installing picture hooks, painting and installing security systems without the landlord’s permission.

Daniel Andrews has made it impossible to have control over your own property,” the bidder retorted, stating that he’ll be investing interstate in the future.

However, he said he wouldn’t be selling the homes he’d purchased for families of sick children who are receiving support through Ronald McDonald House and My Room Children’s Cancer Charity.

Despite bidding on Steph and Gian Ottavios house during the November 5 episode, Danny left this year’s auction empty-handed.
