Fans are convinced The Bachelor Australia‘s Laura Byrne is being primed to replace Lisa Wilkinson as a host on The Project.

The veteran journalist announced her departure from the current affairs program during the November 20 broadcast, revealing that she was “stepping back from hosting the show” effective immediately.

Just moments after the shock announcement, Laura, 36, shared a snap of herself and Lisa from The Project desk.

“Boy did tonight’s show throw us all a spanner we weren’t expecting,” she penned. “[Lisa] you’re all class, and it has been not just a career highlight but the biggest privilege to sit at your desk.

“As a viewer and lover of the show, you will be so very missed.”

The admiration-filled tribute garnered Lisa’s attention, whose response spurred speculation that the Life Uncut podcast host will nab a permanent gig VERY soon.

“I absolutely loved doing the show with you. I am so thrilled you are now a part of The Project family,” Lisa wrote.

The sweet exchange sent Laura’s 338k followers into a tizzy, with some declaring she was a “natural” in the role.

“Hope you get a hosting job,” one fan wrote, while another said she has “a knack” for it after several episodes on the desk.

Another viewer declared: “Laura you need a permanent spot.”

While it would be EPIC to see the star take on a more regular gig on The Project, rumour has it Laura and her Life Uncut co-host Brittany Hockley are already locked in to host KIIS FM’s afternoon drive radio program in 2023.

Why Is Lisa Wilkinson Leaving The Project?

There wasn’t a dry eye in the house when Lisa revealed she was stepping away from The Project, with the longtime TV host confessing “it’s time to reprioritise a few things” in her life.

“After almost 15 years of the early alarm of breakfast TV, and now another five years here at The Project desk, I’m looking at how I want the coming years to play out both professionally and personally,” she said.

“So, from tonight, I am stepping back from hosting the show.”

However, the 62-year-old said she isn’t disappearing from Channel 10 forever, having been “looking at some exciting work ideas ahead”.
