The real reason behind Channel 10 ditching MasterChef Australia‘s iconic intro featuring Katy Perry‘s Hot N Cold has been uncovered.

ICYMI: The long-running kitchen show did away with the theme song in 2023. And it’s safe to say fans have felt the absence of bopping along to the banger while getting to know the current MasterChef contestants.

“I’ve said it before, and so have others! Bring back the opening theme song! Please!” one fan wrote on Reddit.

“I LOVED the old openings with the song. Educational AND cute!” another penned.

Meanwhile, some suspected the rights to the Katy Perry hit was too expensive to justify keeping it.

“If Ten can’t afford to license Katy Perry any more, how about the song they use in many overseas versions?” one MasterChef viewer suggested.

“The cute shots they used to accompany the song meant we all learned who all the contestants were after just a few nights.”

Another questioned: “Does anyone know why they got rid of the opening with the contestants and the theme song? ‘Hot N Cold’, [was it] too expensive? Harder to know the contestants this way.”

Channel 10 spokesperson weighs in on MasterChef Australia theme song

The good people over at PEDESTRIAN.TV did some digging and reached out to the network itself to get to the bottom of Hot N Cold‘s axing.

According to a spokesperson, saying buh-bye to the song — whose singer appeared as a guest judge on the show in 2020 — had nothing to do with funding.

“The opening credits were removed in Season 15 (2023). The decision was made to get into the action faster at the top of each episode,” they said.

Understandable!

But still… Bring back Hot N Cold!
