The Married at First Sight Australia cast has very little control over their Instagram accounts while the show is airing, so who writes their captions?

Typically, contestants relinquish their socials to producers at the start of every season. However, they may have more input in their social content than we originally thought!

As it turns out, they’re formed after a bit of a collaboration between participants and producers.

In episode 170 of the So Dramatic! podcast, 2021 bride Beck Zemek revealed that the powers at be “control” what you write.

“The amount of times I wrote a caption and they’re just like, ‘No, you can’t write that [because] it doesn’t go with the storyline’,” she said as part of So Dramatic!‘s AFTERMAFS series.

However, she disclosed that the cast isn’t aware of what storylines will play out as the episodes — and edits — are yet to air.

She continued: “So they will go, ‘No, you can’t say that’, or ‘Make it brief’… Then you’re getting… criticised based on the caption you put to a photo even though you don’t know what’s going to air.”

What is the process for posting captions on Instagram while Married at First Sight is airing?

According to Beck, contestants are given “a whole lot of pictures” from upcoming episodes that they can use for Instagram posts.

“Obviously they’re just still photos, so you can only write what you think you can write,” she recalled.

Noting that “some people come up with some great content” based on what they’re given, the TV bride said sometimes “you just get really stuck”.

“You don’t want to… put your foot anywhere,” she explained, “But when you want to be vocal, they’ll come back and say ‘Sorry, it’s not approved’.

“‘You can’t say that’ or ‘you can’t mention that person’ or whatever it may be. There’s rules around it.”

So yep, that spicy AF comment from Tori Adams was totally her doing!

Melinda Willis shares more details about posting to Instagram while MAFS is airing

Married at First Sight 2023 bride Melinda Willis also confirmed that producers “send you screengrabs… on the day” the corresponding episode airs.

“So, you don’t get to see the episode. They’ll send you screengrabs of the episode, and if you’re confused or you forget what happened at that point in time, you can say, ‘Hey, just give me a refresh’,” she said on AFTERMAFS.

“And they’ll say, ‘Cool, you were feeling this way, you’ve gone and done this’. Then you’re writing in that moment what’s happened.”

Given that the pics and captions drop at the same time as the episode, Melinda said viewers often forget the participants already know what’s going to unfold.

“So when followers go and read that caption and see that photo, they literally think that [participants] are just talking in that moment and they’re blindsided to what’s coming next and they don’t know that on the couch, he’s gonna do this or say this.”
