Abbie Chatfield and Sam Newman have locked horns after she called out the media personality’s questionable comments about his departure from The Footy Show.

Sam recently took to his podcast, You Cannot Be Serious, to slam The Masked Singer Australia panellist for criticising his sense of humour on her own podcast, It’s a Lot.

Claiming he’s “never heard” of Abbie, the ex-footballer said her opinion that his jokes are “racist”, is a crock of sh*t.

“I’ve honestly never heard of her,” he told his listeners. “Someone sent it to me and I thought this is throwaway, salacious bullsh*t about stuff I speak about.

“I’m not homophobic, racist or any of the things she’s saying I am.”

According to Sam, if someone discusses “those subjects, suddenly you get branded as that”.

“She should worry about her own podcast and getting notoriety on her own, rather than off the back of others,” he continued. “She’s simply mentioning me in the hope of getting noticed.”

Sam’s comments follow Abbie’s discussion of a recent interview in which the former The Footy Show panellist discussed his exit from Channel Nine.

At the time, Sam claimed it was “pointless” for him to be a part of the show as he “couldn’t be a little edgy”.

“The woke society got hold of us all. It was pointless being on the show because they said you can’t do this or that,” he said.

“Please, I’m not complaining at all but we like to be a little edgy.”

What Did Abbie Chatfield Say About Sam Newman’s Comments?

Reacting to Sam’s comments, Abbie said there are other reputable people who could host the long-running talk show.

“There are enough nice and normal footy players they can put on [The Footy Show] instead,” the 27-year-old suggested.

She continued: “[Sam’s] edgy is being racist… If you can’t be funny without being racist, homophobic or sexist, then you aren’t funny.”

The former Geelong Cats player first joined The Footy Show in 1993 and has since been embroiled in a number of controversial scandals.

What Has Sam Newman Been Called Out for In the Past?

In 1999, Sam appeared on the show with his face painted black as he proceeded to impersonate Indigenous footballer Nicky Winmar.

He later dubbed climate activist Greta Thunberg as an “annoying little brat” in 2019, which preceded comments in which he mocked New Zealand’s Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern‘s kiwi accent.

The media personality’s 35-year stint with Channel Nine concluded in June 2020 after he labelled George Floyd — a key figure in the Black Lives Matter movement — a “piece of sh*t”.

However, it was seemingly water off a duck’s back for Sam, who said he was accustomed to being called out.

“The cancel culture kicked in and I got cancelled,” he told the Sacked: Showbiz podcast. “The sponsors got a bit edgy… and I said if you want me to disassociate myself then I’m happy to do that.”
