Gogglebox Australia‘s Mick Kershaw has reflected on his wife Di Kershaw‘s final days after the TV personality died following a short bout of throat cancer.
Di’s death was announced on July 25, along with news that the 76-year-old had been battling an inoperable throat tumour.
Mick has now revealed that the former model decided to end her life “earlier rather than later” due to not wanting to put her family through the uphill climb of treatment.
“The cancer spread and was inoperable. The only alternative to that was chemo or radiation but she was far too weak to be put through that,” he told the Daily Mail Australia. “She would have hated to sit around here for six months being incapacitated.
“So she made the decision to end it earlier rather than later.”
Mick added that “a big part of that decision was not wanting to put us through that”.
Alongside her husband, Di is survived by her children, Victoria and Alex.
According to the 80-year-old, his wife opted to keep her diagnosis under wraps, even after receiving nine-week-long treatment at Sydney’s St Vincents Hospital.
She was then relocated to Sacred Heart Hospice, where she died after two weeks.
Gogglebox Australia Stars Show an Outpouring of Love In the Wake of Di’s Death
The cast of Gogglebox Australia — which begins filming again in August — have shared their fondest memories of Di in the wake of her death.
Sarah-Marie and Matty Fahd expressed that the “[Gogglebox] family lost a good one”, with the duo penning sweet statements on their Instagram Stories.
Sarah-Marie wrote: “We can’t believe you’re gone. Rest in Peace you beautiful, elegant, witty, fashionable and creative angel. We will never forget you Di. [sic].”
Despite Di’s vocal opinions about Angie Kent‘s reality TV escapades, the former Gogglebox star-turned-Bachelorette and her fellow couch warmer, Yvie Jones, expressed their sadness over Di’s death.
“Very saddened to hear the news this morning that fellow Gogglebox family member Di has passed away. She was such a force. Our hearts go out to Mick and their children and family. What a loss [sic],” they wrote in a joint statement.
Mick and Di were inaugural cast members of Gogglebox Australia, having appeared in every season since its conception in 2015.
Mick will not return in the coming seasons.
