Masterchef Australia’s Billie McKay and Sarah Todd have revealed they made a secret, unaired pact after seeing what was in the finale’s mystery box.
Speaking to Yahoo Lifestyle, the final two admitted the boxes’ ingredients weren’t overly inspiring, but it allowed them to focus on their strengths because it was an open pantry challenge.
“I can’t remember exactly what they were, but we weren’t overly excited about the ingredients,” Billie told the publication, with Sarah agreeing it was “doable” but not “exciting”.
This led Billie and Sarah to make a pact that they would focus on their respective strengths in the kitchen, desserts and savoury dishes.
“I think Billie can cook anything in the desert space, and I can cook anything savoury. So we kind of made a pact because there’s no malice, and we wanted to make sure we could put our best foot forward. It was fun,” Sarah said.

Celebrity chef Heston Blumenthal designed the final Pressure Test, which some fans claimed was unfair to Sarah. Billie had previously worked under Heston’s tutelage at his London restaurant, The Fat Duck.
“It is what it is,” Sarah said, acknowledging she walked into the competition knowing the show’s current format.
Billie won the Masterchef Australia finale on July 12, pulling just two points ahead in the final pressure test despite her first dish – cumin, rosemary and rhubarb panna cotta – suffering a “major fail” because it didn’t set correctly.
