Married at First Sight Australia 2022 devolved into uncharted chaos on Wednesday night after Cody Bromley revealed he wasn’t attracted to his wife due to her ethnicity.
Feeling dejected after not being placed first in the bride ranking challenge, the 33-year-old asked: “Is the lack of interest, attraction and affection due to my nationality and look?”
Just when we thought Cody couldn’t muster up anything more tone-deaf than his “my schlong isn’t coordinating with my head” comment, he really started a sentence with: “I’m not racist, but…”
As anyone with half a brain can expect, this didn’t go over well with viewers.
What Did Viewers Say About Cody Bromley’s Comments On Married At First Sight?
Apparently, Cody’s decision to rank Samantha Moitzi higher than his wife wasn’t race-related. In fact, he claimed it had more to do with the fact that he’s “more familiar” with “blonde, surfy” women from his native Sydney’s northern beaches.
Now, he might be a swim coach, but he sure is backstroking fast…
Saying someone is “not normally what you go for” isn’t a barrier to falling for someone. If you like the person. You say you find them attractive what you “normally go for” is irrelevant. Cody is lying through his teeth in one way or another.#MAFSAU #MAFS— Elsie (@elsielou77) February 9, 2022
Cody’s comments about not initially finding Selina attractive because of her race goes deeper than just being a “preference”. It’s bias and it’s racism. I’m sick of yt people seeing other races as less attractive and calling it “having a type” #mafs— Saskia (@saskia_m_t) February 9, 2022
Cody Solidifies Selina’s Feelings About Being Asian
Since the series kicked off, the South Australian has been open about the bullying she’s faced as a result of her race.
Despite this, the Married at First Sight groom was unable to grasp how his disappointing (see also: racist) comments would affect his own wife.
If Cody has a specific type, it’s so fucked up that this show put an already vulnerable woman with him knowing he wouldn’t be into her #MAFS— Lauren (@vii_lauren) February 9, 2022
Cody is a dick. Sam ranked him at 5 or under lol I’m dreading rgw next bit… “I’m not racist but…” my heart is hurting for Selina! Especially after she said she was bullied for being Asian! That so fkd up! #MAFSAustralia #mafs— Jᴀɴᴇ Oʜ! (@uhohjaneoh) February 9, 2022
My heart goes out to Asian viewers who saw their fears used for reality drama fodder. I find it hard to believe their “experts” missed Cody’s “preference”. Shame on #MAFS for being so negligible in their duty of care towards Selina, contestants of colour, and viewers of colour.— Merryana Salem (they/them) (@akajustmerry) February 9, 2022
Cody Ain’t All That
Standing in solidarity with Selina, a number of Twitter users took to the platform to boost her up… even if it came at the cost of dragging old mate Cody back to earth.
I’m straight but if I had to choose between Selina or Cody I would pick her hands down. I don’t find him attractive at all. She’s gorgeous. #MAFS— Lisa L 🍋💛 (@LisaLemon09) February 9, 2022
Boy, the experts are going to have a field day with this one.
