Former AFL player Mitch Hibberd is hoping to find his first (and last!) serious relationship on Love Island Australia.

Ahead of his arrival to the Byron Bay villa, the 25-year-old confessed that he’s “never actually had a relationship”. And straight away, the red flags are a-waving!

“I’ve always said I would never jump into anything because I had to be 100 per cent certain,” he told the Herald Sun.

He also reckons that he’ll only have “one girlfriend [his] whole life.

“That will be someone I will marry and have kids with,” he mused and, smell that? That’s the sweet stench of naïveté, folks!

It also appears that Mitch likes to keep his numbers low across the board — the AFL ‘star’ only played nine games when he was in the premier league.

Following a stint at North Melbourne, Mitch’s time was cut short with the Essendon Bombers after an injury saw him delisted in 2020.

Still, his few “big games” certainly earned him the attention of the ladies.

“I get back to my phone and there’s a lot of girls sliding in my DMs,” he admitted in a teaser clip. And this begs the question: Why hasn’t he snagged himself a girlfriend in the past?

Apparently, Mitch isn’t keen on a woman who only wants to be a WAG —little does he know this requirement cuts his list of potential lovers in half!

“I’m looking for someone who is genuine and likes me for me. I’m a big softie at heart.”

Being Vulnerable In The Villa

The Tasmanian-born athlete is hoping his experience means he’s known as more than ‘Mitch the footballer’.

Having been in a “boys’ club footy environment”, it’s been tough for Mitch to open up and harness his vulnerability.

“You have to put yourself out there and learn to put your emotions on the line and be vulnerable,” he said. “That’s something I’m not very good at, being around footy clubs all my life.”

He’s also prepared for his mates to “[give him] a bit of stick”, but it’s something he’s willing to endure in the name of love.

“It’s something I want to do because I don’t want to be single forever.”

Having undergone nine major surgeries in the past, we hope Mitch doesn’t have to add ‘broken heart’ to that list of injuries!

You can catch Mitch on Love Island Australia 2021 Monday through Thursday nights at 8:45pm on Channel Nine and 9Now.
