A former Farmer Wants a Wife Australia producer has spilled on why the show “won’t survive” following backlash from fans.

Over the past two years, fans have complained that the wholesome dating show they once loved is turning into a drama-fest, much like Married at First Sight.

And after the cheating scandals, breakups and shock walkouts in the 2024 season, we can totally see why.

Now, a former producer has weighed in on the controversy, calling the show out after several farmers failed to find love this year.

“Farmer Wants a Wife was widely popular because it was less dramatic, and I know for a fact we used to be more focused on finding these farmers an actual wife,” the ex-producer told Yahoo! Lifestyle.

“I fear the algorithm is going to be out of whack with attracting the right sort of women who have most likely been turned off the idea of applying,” they said.

They then explained that the dramatic new format would attract wannabe influencers rather than people genuinely looking for The One.

“We know that these reality shows have a way of mimicking trends. MAFS is a spiral of attracting influencers, and that is a real problem for [FWAW]’s longevity.”

The source then said FWAW should “stay in its lane” and remain focused on love if it wants to avoid casting women who are “there for the wrong reasons”.

Ex-producer hopes Farmer Wants a Wife 2025 will showcase ‘genuine love stories’

Despite this season’s dramatics, the producer told Yahoo! Lifestyle that they haven’t lost hope for the 2025 season.

“Here’s hoping they go for genuine love stories this time around, as I fear the show won’t survive another series like the last,” they said. “Let’s hope they haven’t broken the show.”

This comes as fans claimed they’d stop watching FWAW if the drama weren’t dialled down.

“Producers are trying to turn FWAW into the new MAFS,” one viewer wrote to a fan group on Facebook, whilst another claimed: “If it’s all drama like this year, I’ll be giving it the flick.”

A third added, “Even though Channel Seven received complaints about this year’s series, the format will be the same with even more drama. There are no changes, just more rubbish, it seems.”
