A Married at First Sight Australia 2024 participant has revealed they’re “broke” after being paid peanuts while filming the marriage experiment.
It’s been widely reported that MAFS participants don’t make much money while on the show, no matter how much drama, backlash or wine-throwing comes their way.
As such, one star from the 11th season said that despite the $150 a day pay and a $125 food allowance, the show severely set them back financially.

“I am broke after having appeared on the show. I couldn’t even make my rent payments with what we were being paid,” they told The Daily Telegraph.
The participant explained that they spent bucketloads on outfits and makeup for the show. However, they later discovered they couldn’t even wear what they chose.
“We would film late, so I would be ordering takeaway most nights. I spent a bomb on outfits, hair and makeup, and to top it off, they didn’t even let us wear what we wanted,” they said.
What have past Married at First Sight participants said about what they’re paid on the show?
During an Instagram Q&A last year, 2023 groom Jesse Burford said stars on his season were paid $1,175 a week during filming.
Meanwhile, MAFS 2022 “villain” Olivia Frazer told her followers that those on her season made “$1,100 per week” for a few months of filming.

Unsurprisingly, participants aren’t exactly thrilled with being paid a pittance, considering how much money the production makes overall.
“The show makes an incredible amount of money,” 2020 groom Mikey Pembroke said on the I’ve Got News for You podcast.

“And, say, you were on, you know, a TV show that does really well, the actors get paid more and more because it’s doing so well.
“They [the MAFS participants] are the ones putting themselves out there… Then the channel makes millions and millions of dollars in advertising.”
