It’s been confirmed that Big Brother Australia will not be returning to the small screen in 2024 after speculation arose amid the 2023 season’s dismal ratings.
In December, industry insiders said that the once-hit show’s future was bleak due to a “disastrous” ratings average of “under 200,000 viewers tuning in overnight for the current series”.
“Seven are sad to see audiences switching off from the once-celebrated format,” they told Yahoo! Lifestyle.
While Big Brother‘s shelving was just hearsay at this point, TV Blackbox confirmed on January 2 that it had been wiped from Channel 7’s schedule in 2024.
As such, doubt was cast over whether the show would return at all.
However, a spokesperson for Channel 7 has since confirmed that the channel is “still considering [the show’s] future”.
Former Big Brother winner Reggie Bird makes a request for future seasons
It comes after two-time Big Brother winner Reggie Bird called for the series to return to its original format after the 2023 season’s “House of Love” theme proved unpopular with fans.
“Well, could see this coming a mile away!” she penned under an Instagram post detailing a potential axing in December.
“As I’ve said all along with this Love Island format, the true blue Big Brother fans don’t want to see this!”
She added: “Big Brother has always been a social experiment, seeing all walks of life interacting with each other! And this just proves they need to go back to basics!
“To not even have a live finale and squish the rest of the episodes into three more nights goes to show that Channel Seven wants it off the air fast! Bring back the original Big Brother.” Hear, hear!
