Big Brother Australia is reportedly facing the chopping block AGAIN in 2024 as its latest season struggles with “disastrous” ratings.
Seven nabbed the rights to the once-hit reality series in 2019 and announced its reboot in 2020, six years after it last appeared on Channel Nine.
To Seven’s delight, the first season of the reboot raked in an average audience of 830,000 viewers. However, this was less than half of the viewership for its first-ever season in 2003.
Now, after four seasons and the celebrity version, Big Brother VIP, ratings are well and truly in the bin, per Yahoo! Lifestyle.
“Ratings are at a disastrous average of under 200,000 viewers tuning in overnight for the current series,” an insider told the outlet.
“Now [episodes are] being squished together to finish up prematurely next week in a new 8:30 pm time slot, which is not what Channel Seven wanted.”
They added: “Seven are sad to see audiences switching off from the once-celebrated format.”
Big Brother is on hiatus despite being part of Seven’s 2024 Upfronts event
According to the source, Big Brother has been axed from Seven’s 2024 programming and will be on hiatus for the foreseeable future.
This is despite the network announcing the show as part of their annual Upfronts event in October.
“Seven were clever to mention Big Brother Australia in their Upfronts but failed to mention the show currently being seen was not really a part of their future lineup in 2024,” they said.
The will-they-won’t-they nature of the show comes after rumours swirled Big Brother wouldn’t return in 2023.
However, it did, so, who knows? Maybe it’ll rise from the ashes again next year? Stranger things have happened…
