Spotify has released new data that has revealed which Australian Idol star is the most-streamed artist from the series.
The once-hit singing competition — which was rebooted this year — churned out a bunch of icons in the noughties.
We’re talking Guy Sebastian, Shannon Noll, Jessica Mauboy, Ricki-Lee Coulter, just to name a few.
Now, Spotify has shared data collected from 2008 to the present day, unveiling which Australian Idol star has racked up the most streams on the music app.
Turns out, Matt Corby is verrrrry popular worldwide!
The Season Five runner-up has amassed a massive 576 million streams thanks to hits such as Brother, Resolution and Miracle Love.
Matt even beat out OG Australian Idol winner Guy Sebastian, who has 530 million streams behind him, making him the second most-streamed artist.
Jessica Mauboy came in at third, followed by Stan Walker.
When it comes to Australian-specific listens, Guy takes up the top spot with 275 million local streams.
His song Choir is the most-streamed song in Australia of any Australian Idol contestant.
Spotify Australia’s Head of Music weighs in on the rising popularity of Australian Idol stars
Spotify Australia’s head of music, Alicia Sbrugnera, said despite how many years it’s been since the original Australian Idol, the songs from the stars that came from the original series are still gaining popularity.
“Australian Idol has grown to become a cultural phenomenon that has, and continues, to shape our nation’s pop and music Zeitgeist,” Alicia told Yahoo! Lifestyle.
“With early seasons gifting the nation with unforgettable moments from Nollsy allegedly being robbed of first place to the first ever double touchdown, it’s evident that Australia’s beloved Idol stars are still a regular part of the nation and the world’s music listening habits.”
