Heartbreak Island — modelled off the New Zealand format of the same name — has the hottest line-up of contestants we’ve seen in a long time. Oh, and the spiciest of drama too!
But as the “Heartbreakers” find their footing, love and enemies on a Fijian island, there’s also whole lotta gameplay that will eventually see someone win $100,000 in prize money.
Like similar dating shows, the stars couple up and compete in challenges to ensure their safety in the competition AND they can also win the chance to stay or stray from their baes — A.K.A “Passion Plays”.
So, how does it all work?
Passion Plays
Akin to Love Island‘s recoupling ceremonies, Heartbreak Island ups the ante with their Passion Plays.
These occasions allow the Heartbreakers to switch up their pairings how they see fit.
However, the players’ destiny lies in the hands of the “Love Dial”, a Wheel of Fortune-esque spinner that decides which Heartbreakers have the advantage of picking their new (or old) bae first.
During Passion Plays, contestants can a) stay with their partner, b) stray to someone else on the island or c) play to bring in a “Disruptor”.
Put simply; the Disruptors aren’t on Heartbreak Island to f*ck spiders. Ready to cause drama and steal yo’ man, the introduction of new contestants throughout the series will put a strain on relationships and alliances.
What Happens During the Challenges on Heartbreak Island Australia?
The challenges on Heartbreak Island can not only make or break relationships but also drastically affect the Heartbreakers’ position in the competition.
In a similar vein to Survivor, the large-scale challenges unfold in the show’s Challenge Arena. It’s here that the couples face various tasks that put their physicality and puzzle-solving abilities to the test.
What’s more, it allows the Heartbreakers to push their love (read: lust) to the limit.
Whoever wins each challenge is safe from the upcoming elimination.
As for those who failed to make an impact, well… safe to say they could be just hours away from packing their bags.
However, one lifeline can save a Heartbreaker from going home: “The Playback”.
The saucy piece of gameplay gives contestants the chance to give their current partner the flick in favour of someone who is facing elimination.
