Married at First Sight Australia 2024‘s Andrea Thompson and Richard Sauerman have opened up about the “confronting” photo-ranking challenge.

For years, the marriage experiment has imploded the relationships it vows to foster when challenging its couples to rank the other brides and grooms against their spouse.

The 11th season was no different, and viewers were screaming at the screen when Richard ranked Andrea THIRD, behind some of the show’s much younger participants. Yikes!

Chatting to Refinery29 after the episode aired, Andrea said she was “actually really hurt watching that again”.

“I thought I was acting real cool, but you could totally see how I was feeling,” she confessed, adding that experience would never happen in a typical relationship.

“When you’re confronted with someone ranking you like that, it’s awful. It makes you feel so bad because I would never do that to someone in the real world.”

She added: “I just believe that when you have your husband, no matter what, they come first. You just don’t do that to your person.”

The 51-year-old also revealed that Richard texted after the challenge played out onscreen and apologised for his actions. And as he should!

In an interview with the Hit Network’s Allan and Carly, Richard confirmed he “cleared the air” with Andrea.

“I apologised. I texted her afterwards and said, ‘Man, that was horrible, I’m so sorry’,” he explained.

He got a measly “thumbs up” in return, which aligns with tea that the couple haven’t “really kept in touch” since filming!

Richard, the show’s oldest-ever groom, confessed he wasn’t proud of how he conducted himself during the challenge.

“Seeing oneself on television like that…. Do I like myself… I don’t think I do… it’s quite confronting,” he said.

Dubbing himself “pretty awful and quite cringe-worthy,” Richard said their relationship has “never been about looks” for him.

“It’s about the chemistry, the vibe, and the feeling. We’re so strong, so I really thought this exercise would be a fun thing to do and have no impact at all!” he added.

“It wasn’t good. It wasn’t good….. I cop it, and I own it, and let’s move forward.”
