After ten days of battling it out in Jordan’s Wadi Rum Desert, just two celebrity recruits officially passed selection in SAS Australia 2023.
The gruelling finale kicked off with AFLW personality Abbey Holmes, Thai cave rescuer Dr Craig Challen, The Bachelor Australia‘s Tim Robards and Olympic diver Matthew Mitcham being welcomed into the last day of the Special Forces course with a barrage of stun grenades.
Then, they were tasked with a slew of final challenges, including a taxing hostage rescue.
While each of the final recruits completed Chief Instructor Ant Middleton‘s tasks, only half of the team officially made it through selection to become the winners of SAS Australia 2023: Tim and Matthew.
After passing the course, Tim said: “I’m so happy. It’s shown what strength I’ve got inside. I probably doubted that a lot.”
“It was hard work. So many times you just want to stop, and you want to quit, and you’ve just gotta keep pushing and pushing. I can’t wait to call my wife and tell her that I made it.”
Meanwhile, Matthew told Seven that he “definitely thrived throughout this course”.
“I was controlled by my inner saboteur before, but now, I feel capable of doing basically anything,” he added. “I am just so elated.
“This has been the best experience of my entire life. I am so overwhelmed with gratitude.”

Taking to Instagram following his SAS Australia win, Tim revealed that one of the most enriching parts of the show was “being surrounded by recruits from such different walks of life”.
He wrote: “Most would normally be so quick to judge and label, but everyone looked for the positive attributes in each other and the unique experiences that each person brought… Something you don’t experience so much of in the world these days.”
“It was so refreshing to me and so special.”
