Love Island Australia 2018‘s Kim Hartnett has sparked debate online after revealing her controversial method of birth control.

The 27-year-old, who welcomed a son with The Bachelor franchise’s Matt Whyatt last year, took to the ‘gram with a Q&A in early May, and safe to say fans had a LOT to say.

In one slide, Kim answered the question: “What method of birth control do you use?”

Sharing a blurred-out photo of her son, Chase, the ex-reality star said she doesn’t use contraceptives.

“I don’t like the side effects they have on your body,” she admitted, adding that she and Matt opt to “pull [out] and pray”.

It wasn’t long before the confession was shared on Influencer Updates AU‘s account, who wondered what fans felt about “influencers sharing these details”.

As you can imagine, the comment section got HEATED.

What did fans have to say about Kim Hartnett’s birth control confession?

Kim’s admission garnered varied reactions from followers, with some admitting it’s “not the best thing to be promoting”.

“Normalise getting a vasectomy,” one user penned, while another said it was a “question [she should] have answered with caution”.

A third user claimed they weren’t “against” people choosing not to take “hormonal contraceptives”. However, they believed the “notion of ‘pull and pray’ misses the mark”.

“That statement is a little bit off and could have used the post to encourage research and education,” they wrote. “Not joke about pull-out methods and pray you don’t end up pregnant.”

FYI: The “pull-out” method of birth control has been one up for debate for years, with medical studies showing it isn’t effective as other methods, and doesn’t protect against sexually transmitted infections.

The Victorian Government’s Better Health website advises against the method.

“It is not recommended as a form of contraception due to the risks of sperm being present in the pre-ejaculate or not withdrawing the p*nis in time,” it reads.

However, many other followers were of the belief that Kim wasn’t “advocating” for the withdrawal practice.

“She’s not ‘promoting’ or ‘advocating for’ anything,” one person declared. “She just answered honestly what she chooses to do with her body. That’s fine.”

Another said that it’s not an influencer’s responsibility to educate their fans.

“They asked. She answered. Technically, it isn’t a method of birth control, not to mention a very unreliable one,” they wrote. “But if someone decides to follow an unqualified influencers personal preference and choices.

“That’s on you. Not them.”
