Australian Idol 2004 winner Casey Donovan has been busted for “dognapping” a puppy, however, claims the stunt was all in good faith.
CCTV footage of the snafu shows the singer and a friend by the name of Drew leaving an apartment in Brisbane on June 19.
In the succeeding moments, a small dog (named Donatello) approaches the pair before Drew picks it up. She and Casey then enter an elevator with the dog in tow.
The debacle was originally shared on Facebook before being broadcast on Channel 9 News the following night.
Despite the shady footage, Casey has since revealed that she and Drew rescued the dog after witnessing it being mistreated.
Taking to her Facebook page, the 34-year-old said Drew’s “heart was in the right place” amid the incident.
Recounting the night’s events, Casey said the pair were at a friend of Drew’s apartment for drinks when Drew allegedly saw Donatello thrown across the room by the friend’s housemate. Say what?!
Confessing there was some “commotion” following the incident, Casey said she and Drew left the apartment. It was then that they came across the dog in the hallway.
She continued: “Drew still being very upset about what had happened and with great concern for the dog’s welfare, decided to take the dog home so the people who were in the apartment that were heavily intoxicated could sober up and be more responsible with the poor dog. [sic].”
Casey Donovan Admits That What She and Drew Did Was Wrong
The I‘m a Celebrity…Get Me Out of Here 2017 winner said she personally “didn’t witness the dog being thrown”.
However, she “stand[s] by Drew’s account of what happened”.
“I certainly do not condone any type of cruelty or abuse towards an animal whatsoever and am appalled and in shock.”
She then stated that her friend had “all intentions” of returning Donatello once she received confirmation that the housemate in question was no longer there.
“I agree Drew should have not taken the dog and should have advised the friend immediately that she had,” Casey wrote.
“I can confirm 100% there was no conspiracy, plan or discussion about stealing the dog.”
She concluded by revealing that Drew has “taken steps” to report the mistreatment of Donatello to the appropriate officials.
